Regardless of disability, every person is considered a competent adult when they turn 18. If an adult with special needs cannot properly manage their own affairs, a family member or friend can apply to become that person’s legal guardian. A legal guardian assists the disabled adult with decision making regarding their personal, financial, and legal affairs to ensure that their rights, interests, and desires are met and protected. Attorney Sandy assists clients in the Nassau County, NY, and surrounding areas with applying for guardianship for special needs adults. She has extensive experience working with the families of those with developmental disabilities and mental health issues who require lifelong assistance of some kind. Contact our firm today to find out what you can do to protect your loved one’s future. Call (516) 822-3397 or fill out our online contact form.
To apply for guardianship for a special needs adult, you must file an Article 17A Guardianship Petition with the Surrogate’sCourt. This petition is reserved specifically for appointing a guardian for a person who is intellectually or developmentally disabled.
Our firm can assist you with your application and ensure that your unique needs are met. We also provide a wide range of other legal services for individuals and families with special needs; contact us today to schedule your appointment.
